Was Student Health Actually Going to Start Charging Students?
VUWSA 2027 President Charlotte Lawrence says she “will ensure VUW doesn’t start charging for Mauri Ora.” But was the University actually considering it?
When asked what that concern was based on, Lawrence pointed to conversations between the University and students over the 2027 Student Services Fee. Lawrence was involved in part of that consultation in her 2026 role as VUWSA Engagement Vice President.
Her concern had a basis. The University confirmed to Salient that students were asked whether they would support making a co-payment for GP and nurse appointments at Student Health.
However, the University says the proposal is no longer being explored.
A University spokesperson said initial consultation results showed students were split 50:50 on introducing a co-payment. Counselling was never proposed to attract a charge.
The University said the option had been considered as it looked to make Student Health financially sustainable while continuing to meet student demand.
So, Lawrence’s promise responds to a real option considered during consultation, rather than an announced policy. But, as of now, the University says it has since dropped the proposal.
