Want to Write for Salient?
So you’ve got an idea you want to share with students across Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington? Great. The best way to get started is by sending a pitch: a short summary of your idea that tells us what you want to write, why it matters, and how you plan to bring it to life.
A pitch isn’t a finished story. Think of it as a roadmap—it helps our editorial team understand your concept, shape it with you, and decide whether it’s the right fit for Salient’s upcoming issues.

What to Include in Your Pitch
Your pitch should be short and sharp — usually no more than a few paragraphs. Here’s what to include:

  1. A concise description of your idea.
What’s your story about? What angle are you taking?
Focus on the “why” — why it matters, why it’s timely, and why students will care.

  2. An estimated word count.
Most Salient features sit between 1,200 and 2,000 words, though we sometimes commission shorter or longer pieces depending on the topic and style. If your story is complex or investigative, you can go longer (up to around 3,500 words). If it’s lighter or more reactive, shorter is fine.

  3. Any interviews you plan to do.
Let us know who you’ll be talking to — whether it’s students, academics, experts, or people involved in the issue. A strong pitch usually identifies at least one key voice you’ll include.

  4. Why the story matters to the student body.
Salient is by and for students, so every piece should answer one key question:
Why is this story relevant to students at Victoria University?
Maybe it explores a policy change that affects your fees or housing. Maybe it captures a slice of campus life that deserves attention. Maybe it connects a national issue to the student experience. Whatever it is, show us the link.

    How to Send Your Pitch
Once you’ve got your idea outlined, send it to the Editor-in-Chief at editor@salient.org.nz. You can also submit it through the online pitch form on our website.
When you email your pitch, make sure to include the following details:
Full name (and author name, if different)
    Pronouns
Piece concept—a short summary of what you want to explore
    Estimated word count
Any initial sources or interviews you plan to contact
The Editor-in-Chief (or another editor) will get back to you with feedback, questions, or suggestions. They’ll help you refine your angle and guide your piece through the pitching and writing process.

    What Happens After You Pitch
If your idea’s a good fit, you’ll work with one of our section editors to shape the story. They’ll provide feedback, help with structure, and ensure your piece meets Salient’s tone, ethics, and editorial standards.
Don’t worry if you haven’t written for publication before—that’s what we’re here for. We work with first-time writers all the time and can help you through every stage: research, interviews, drafting, editing, and publication.
Depending on the type of story, your editor might also ask you to gather photos, infographics, or supporting materials. If you’re writing something more creative—like a personal essay, cultural commentary, or hybrid piece—we’ll help you find the right format and voice for it.
