Chuganaut, Masters of Metal and Dave Snell, Mount Street Bar, Friday 29 February
This was one of the sweetest gig concepts I’ve witnessed: massive speaker stacks rattling a student cafe; opening with a hair-metal covers band in lycra and spandex; finish with a kookie damn bassy weird metal; and in between the two, hear Waikato’s famous boganologist Dave Snell talk about, well, the audience. A little bit of this, a little bit of that! I believe these words sum up Tiki Live to a T. Tiki Live is the product of Tiki Tane’s sweet song writing skills and a powerful live performance of multi genre tendencies. Tiki has definitely shaken off the dub image that most people would identify him by, and has put on a more modern day hat, showing that he is up with the times and definitely has something awesome still to give. The MC/Chairperson/Salient hater was Greg Ellis, a NZ comedian of some description who throughout the night kept proceedings going in a leisurely and humorous way. On the affirmative team we had: Nandor Tanczos, some dude called Ian from Tui, and Wellington comedian Jerome Chandrahasen, and on the negating team, Darren Hughes, some dude called Hamish from Tui, and bearded person Josh Cameron. The moot was “Auckland should be New Zealand’s capital.” More

March 4th
Speight’s Trivia Night
Mt. St. Bar from 7pm (Team registrations at the bar) - Free entry, R18
Mt St Bar plays host to the first of many trivia nights for 2008. Prizes for both quiz-smarts and best team name (traditionally pretty rude names win this one, which goes to demonstrate the level of humour prevalent within this academic institution, y’all). Teams should contain approximately four people and any number of mythological creatures. Go on, you know you wanna show off your mad trivia skills – there’s free entry and great prizes. Plus it’s only a Tuesday, so it’s not like you’ve got anywhere else to be. More

What is Orientation?
The Orientation Festival is the event to kick start what should be a great year at university. There should be something for everyone. Music, sports, trivia, clubs galore, street performers and of course the Hang Over Hangi. This is the time of year to meet new people and try some new things. If you are new to Wellington then make sure you see some of the music and sights on offer. More

If you’re new to Wellington, or just a bit out of the loop as far as the city’s nightlife is concerned, you probably aren’t aware of the hip joints at which you should be hanging come night time. In the interests of student party fun-times and keeping you away from skanky bars, I took one for the team and headed out over two nights to review what was going down at my top ten bars. More

Vicky’s (aka, Mount Street Bar and Cafe)
While you can find the occasional culinary gem between the rows of pies and fries at Vicky’s, most of the time you’ll be paying through the nose. Hey Eurest, a word to the wise: students don’t want to pay $4 for a sandwich, even if it does have sundried tomatoes in it. Lacking other options though, the sandwiches are reasonably good, as is most of the hot food they put out around lunchtime. If, however, you want to pay horrendous amounts of money to clog your arteries, the ‘gourmet’ pies are the way to go. I particularly recommend the kumara and cashew one. More
