Academic Idol: Round three

ANOTHER GREAT week for the competition, with four times the votes of the previous week. It was another edge-of-your-seat week if you were on this end of things. A new addition to the competition was made, with online voting at www.salient.org.nz. Note that it is impossible to vote twice, and check that you are voting for who you want to LEAVE.
So who got the chop? Sadly, it’s time to say good bye to Peter Andreae, who in lasting two weeks in the competition hung around for about the same amount of time that ‘Mysterious Girl’ stayed in the public consciousness all those years ago.
And so now there are ten. This week the competitors task was to write a haiku on their chosen field of study. (I have allowed in a couple which didn’t really fit the brief, but you can judge them with the iron fist of independent decision making.)
Peter Gainsford (Classics)
Stone god stares sternly
at dancing wine-soaked singers;
papyrus threads fray.
Jon Johansson (Political Science)
Politics is life
It is about me and we
And is why we breathe
John McDowall (Psychology)
The brain’s software
Talking through chemicals
No reduction allowed
Free will prevails
Conditioning not allowed
All lovely
Watch and wait
Unfolding occurs slowly
Death alone intervenes
David McLauchlan (Law)
Contract is Promise
But only if objective:
Confusion reigns here.
Sashi Meanger (Management)
Greetings to you all
Kia ora, Namaste
Ni hao ma, Malo
A river to source
Students flow through the lectures
Herenga waka
Why should they attend?
Is it relevant? Hell yea!
Wicked lecturer
Groups, teams and networks
Global Multicultural
Public Relations
Leaders and Power
Communication Audits
All important now
Org Behaviour
And Org Communication
He tangata he!
Grant Morris (Law)
Love them or hate them
Lawyers can save your bacon.
(Ask OJ Simpson).
Warwick Murray (Geography)
I love geography
How can I write the whole world
In three little lines?
Sean Redmond (Film)
Playing Bruce Lee
Bruce Lee leopard-like
my legs kung-fu kick china
over. Time for tea.
Tony Schirato (Media Studies)
The fleeting image
a phantom haunting the pages of my
media studies reader
Matt Wagner (Theatre)
The art of shaping
The world, in Time and in Space,
Making real the soul.
So there it is Victoria University, ten of the best laying it out there poetry style. But who is the weakest link? Who is excess baggage? Tell us who you want gone, by text (to 021-145-2391), (email to editor@salient.org.nz), or online (just to the right).
Who will it be Victoria University? Who will be the Rosita-esque rosebud to reach out and be crowned King?
Same time, same place, next week… see you then.

if there was an option to vote for the best answer, I say it would have to be Wagner’s. just perfect: succint and yet so complete. Thanks for that Matt.
