Sex and the City

In an attempt to be a normal sexually liberated fashionconcerned modern young woman, I went along to film instalment of the television series Sex and the City with my two ‘best gal pals‘. Watching the film Sex and the City was much like eating a cheeseburger at McDonalds. You expect a slaphappy rushed piece of shit and that is exactly what you get.

The story follows main fashionista gal pal Carrie’s (played by Sarah Jessica Parker who has recently been voted by FHM readers as one of the top 5 ugliest women in show business) marriage to ‘Mr Big.’ This is the perfect excuse for a predictable wedding dress montage that leaves the viewer wanting to punch Sarah Jessica Parker. But then - drrrrraaaaaaaaammmma! Mr Big decides to abandon Carrie at the altar due to his pre-wedding jitters. This is a heartbreaking scene for any normal person but if you find Sarah Jessica Parker as irritating as I do, it was a strangely satisfying moment. Despite my irrational hatred of Sarah Jessica Parker I have to admit her acting in this scene was superb. She was, however, a close second to Charlotte (played by Kristen Davis), who did the most convincing enraged look I have seen for sometime. It actually made me sit up in my seat.

The sexual innuendo which the Sex and the City television series was renowned for was somewhat disappointing in the film. I literally felt my IQ drop in a scene where they substituted the word ‘colouring’ for ‘sex’. There were some mildly amusing moments involving cougar and nymphomaniac Samantha (played by Kim Katrell) – one of which included her covering her naked body in homemade sushi wrap as a surprise for her boyfriend, after which she gets wasabi where no women wants to get wasabi.

Sex and the City would have been a disappointment for even the most diehard fans of the television series who did not go and see the film intoxicated. One of the cornerstones of Sex and the City is the focus on pretty dresses and sparkly shoes. How a film that relies on clothes and shoes can get contemporary fashion so wrong is beyond my understanding. The tragically bohemian dresses the four leading ladies wore in Mexico were particularly hideous. Not quirky high fashion but just plain ugly.

Sex and the City was a fun movie with little substance that managed to be mildly amusing. I would not recommend watching Sex and the City if you were not a fan of the series. However, the film is a good way to escape in trashy romance and forget. Which is what we all expected, isn’t it?
